Choosing the Right Gauge

Choosing the Right Gauge

How to Choose the Right String Gauge

The gauge is the thickness of a string, usually given in thousandths of an inch. Electric sets are often sold in 9 and 10 gauge, while acoustic sets come in 10, 11 and 12 gauge.

  • Lighter gauges (9 and 10 for electric, 10 for acoustic) are easier to press down and bend. They suit beginners and players who bend a lot, though they can sound a little thinner.
  • Heavier gauges (11 and 12 for acoustic) give a fuller tone and more volume, and they hold their tuning well. They take more effort to fret.

To choose, start with the gauge you already play, then try one size up or down if you want a different feel. Check your instrument's recommended set if you're unsure.
